Getting ready for another trip

Today I parcelled up a load of our worldly belongings - bedding, cutlery and all sorts of little bits and bobs you can't seem to manage without and am sending them off on their own in 2 big boxes to Casa Mia to wait there for us when we go again in May.

I now have a calendar of bookings and availability and have popped it on owners direct, to make it easy for folk to book on-line yet do the booking with me rather than the site owner.

You can see it here

Here's the lovely big dining table that doubles as a light and airy workspace.

It's the ideal writers retreat or crafters paradise for sitting and sewing or reading or writing. Do you fancy getting creative in casa Mia then popping outside to admire the view?

Our first stay in our own place in Spain

We have just got back from our very first stay in our own chalet in Spain. It's not brand new and looked a little pre-loved, so we got stuck in freshening it up.

Fortunately Brian is a master decorator so I can rest assured it's being done properly, but it meant it was a bit of a busmans holiday for him. We got the interior freshly painted in clean white and will tackle the outside when we go back again in a few weeks.

Finding Casa Mia

It has always been our dream to retire somewhere sunny, where we can get up on a morning and take our coffee outdoors instead of shivering under 3 lays of thermalwear and not wanting to set foot outside for at least half the year.

I'm not a sunbather, but I am a sun worshipper. Like many folk I am affected by the depressing condition SAD (seasonal affective disorder) in the grey winter months of the UK yet when the sun shines I feel like a different person, it brings ease to my aches and pains and a smile to my face. Who wouldn't want to feel like this every day?

We have owned a static caravan in the Dales for almost 10 years. It's been a life saver of sorts, giving us a little rural retreat with beautiful views, helped us get fit by enjoying regular long hill walks and discover new places and meet new folk. But it has been blighted by the harsh Northern weather scuppering our plans many a weekend, wind and rain and bitterly cold days even in Spring and summer. The site closes completely from the end of October to early March and because ice and snow is not only possible but probable right up until April, the water supply isn't restored until Easter.

Our tranquil little bolt hole has come to the end of the road, its now too old to remain on site and we had to make a choice. Fork out for a new one on the same site, give up our weekends and weeks away, or look for pastures new.

So, off we went in search of a new caravan, but this time we decided to choose somewhere we are unlikely to have snow in April. Somewhere in the sun we can finally call our own, instead of forking out large sums to rent apartments or stay in hotels. We wanted somewhere sunny where flights are readily available from our local airports and aren't too prohibitively expensive. We wanted somewhere with a similar rural feel, away from the madding crowds but central enough to public transport and larger resorts to make travel and exploration possible.

This took us to Spain, last Christmas where we viewed a few caravan parks, one too big and noisy, one too remote and isolated and one ... well it ticked all of our boxes!

In the middle of rural Malaga, surrounded by mountains and pine forests with a bus stop right outside, and only about 20 minutes from Malaga airport and a bus ride away from Fuengirola, Malaga and Torremolinos. The 2 nearest towns are Alhaurin el Grande and Alhaurin de la Torre.

Malaga Monte Parc felt right for us as soon as we arrived. Clean and neatly landscaped with about 30 neat caravans and chalets and a separate area for people with touring caravans to stay.

Facilities on site are low key, yet just what we need for a restful break. British owned and managed, there is a large outdoor swimming pool and a handy English speaking reception building which also houses a small shop with basic groceries, and a cozy cafe and bar area with indoor and outdoor seating.

And there it was that we found our new holiday home. A neat Spanish built chalet style home, which they offered to move to a plot of our choice and provide decking.

Here it is with the new decking almost completed.

It becomes our very own piece of sunny Spain in March and we can't wait to visit.

Watch this space for loads more pictures and news and the chance to rent our Casa Mia for your own break in the sun. Until we can retire fully and move there, we are making it available to rent for selected periods. It will be the ideal writers retreat, for bloggers like myself or authors wanting to get away from the daily grind and be inspired by the scenery, as well as couples and families looking for a self catering break.
